The purpose of the Initial Assessment, also known as Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Functional Analysis Assessment (FAA) is to gather relevant data to plan for and determine the needs regarding a possible Behavior Intervention Plan. This must be developed any time a student exhibits behaviors that interfere with learning (his or her learning or the learning of others). The FBA and FAA is a systematic method for determining the functions of a problem behavior that is targeted for reduction. A BCBA, and or/ other highly trained professional should conduct the FBAs and FAA. FBAs and FAAs investigate the relevant setting events, antecedents, and consequences that play a role in the presence and persistence of the problem behavior(s). Information from the FBA and FAA is used to develop and individualize a Positive Behavior Intervention Plan that outlines the procedures to reduce behavioral excess and to teach functionally equivalent replacement behaviors.
As a way to best serve your child, we would conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) / Functional Analysis Assessment (FAA). A Functional Behavior Assessment/ Functional Analysis Assessment (FAA) are the process of:
Identifying problematic behavior(s)
Identifying environmental events which impact problematic behavior(s)
Determining the cause/function of the problematic behavior(s)
Outlining the necessary changes needed to be made by the school, teacher, student, and parent/guardian to allow the student to access the general
An FBA/ FAA may include, but is not limited to, the following components:
Review of student cumulative records- health, medical, and educational
Interviews completed by the student (if applicable), teacher(s), and parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding the student’s behavior
Information gathering tools (e.g., cumulative file review, Motivation Assessment Scale, teacher rating scale and student self-assessment)
Observations of student behavior in school settings
Data collection on student behavior
Interventions to address student behavior, which focus on decreasing negative behavior and teaching new, appropriate replacement behaviors
Ongoing data collection to evaluate intervention effectiveness
Safety or crisis plan, if necessary
We greatly appreciate your involvement in this plan during each step in the process. Data may continue to be gathered throughout the school year to review, update, and modify the FBA.
ABA, Applied Behavior Analysis, is the scientific study of principles of learning and behavior (1). The approach is to understand behavior and how it is affected by the environment. Research has been conducted along many decades to find the most effective ways to reduce or improve targeted behaviors such as aggression, self-stimulatory, and self-injurious. Based on research there are many tools and strategies that can be used to assist an individual in addition to helping individuals acquire different skills such as, language, self-help and play skills. These tools and strategies are used to influence socially important behaviors.
ABA therapy follows an individual’s assessment report/program plan which is based on objective data. Data is collected to determine and make decisions if the individual is making progress or not. Changes are made to the individual’s program plan based on progress. All observations are made within 5 domains; Receptive Communication, Expressive Communication, Pragmatic Communication, Self Help Daily Living Skills, and Behavior.
Practitioners of behavior analysis provide services consistent with the dimensions of ABA. Common services may include, but are not limited to, conducting behavioral assessments, analyzing data, writing and revising behavior-analytic treatment plans, training others to implement components of treatment plans, and overseeing the implementation of treatment plans. Behavior analysts are qualified to provide services to clients with a variety of needs, including improvements in organizational functioning (e.g., staff performance, management and pay structure interventions), skill deficits (e.g., communication, adaptive behavior), and problem behavior (e.g., aggression, self-injurious behavior), among others (1).
